Cybersecurity

Sweden’s renowned technological advancements and digital transformation have prompted similar advancements in physical and cyber security. Sweden’s commitment to international cooperation in security aligns with its foreign-policy objectives and reflects a dedication to addressing global challenges through collaborative and multilateral approaches.

Historically, Swedes have had significant internet access. This has laid the strong Swedish foundation for cybersecurity. The growing number of cyber incidents recently has ignited a proactive approach to cybersecurity development in Sweden. In December 2020, the Swedish government announced the formation of a National Cybersecurity Center, led by four authorities: Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), Swedish National Defense Radio Establishment (FRA), Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish Security Service (SÄPO). They will be supported by other relevant stakeholders, including Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS), Swedish Criminal Investigation Service (RKP), Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), Swedish Certification Body for IT Security (CSEC) and Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST). The center is currently putting together specific cooperation structures with the energy, transportation, and telecommunication sectors.

Physical Security

In the early 1900s, the prevalence of private security companies offering services such as fire surveillance and entrance and gate guarding began to rise. Over the years, the landscape of security solutions has evolved to cater to specialized client needs. The Swedish security industry began as early as 1881, when August Stenman started making locks; today, the industry-leading company is renowned as ASSA Abloy, with more than 1 billion locks and doors that the group developed, manufactured, and sold. Each day, hundreds of millions of people rattle the ASSA ABLOY keys in their pocket, pull out their cards, and click their way in through doors, while experiencing security for themselves and their families.

At present, a handful of international companies, including industry leaders Securitas and Axis Communications, dominate the security sector, showcasing the industry’s transformation and adaptability to meet the dynamic demands of modern clientele. Other companies, such as Verisure, Avarn Security, and Combitech join this defense, contributing to the nation’s overall physical security.
