When Louisiana returned to French possession in 1803, Napoleon proposed that his general, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, be appointed governor of Louisiana. In 1803, Louisiana was sold to the Americans, and Bernadotte had to cancel his plans to go to America. In 1810, Bernadotte was instead named the new crown prince of Sweden and ascended to the throne in 1818.
Louisiana’s top export to Sweden was petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals to a value of 60m USD. Louisiana also exported 20m USD of ethyl alcohol and 2.1m USD of sauces and preparations, mixed condiments, and mixed seasonings.
